Restraint Avoidance Training
An exciting opportunity to attend our online live interactive training course that is designed to provide international educators with the knowledge and tools they need to avoid the use of restraint in schools. This course is designed for international schools and settings where local law may not be specific about the use of restraint in schools.

As experts in the international field of Safeguarding we recognize the challenges of managing risks and the potential issues around using restraint in schools.
This course reflects international standards of best practice regarding safe restraint and provides additional evidence for any school accreditation.
The course will be delivered via Zoom by ICPA Associate Dan Furness an experienced trainer who together with Tim Gerrish regularly delivers safeguarding training and supports international schools in safeguarding development.
What will the training cover?
Through facilitated group dialogue, guided walkthroughs, reflections, presentations, and interactive scenarios.
• A brief introduction into Polyvagal Theory and it’s relation to restraint.
• full explanation of the ERICPD approach to risk management.
• How to use specific risk audits and assessments regarding student behaviour in school.
• Various behaviour management techniques that can reduce the likelihood that restraint will be needed.
• An explanation of the concept of reasonable force in relation to restraint.
• The various situations you need to be mindful of that increase the risk in relation to restraint.
• The restraint techniques that research has proven is unsafe and thus should be avoided.
• How to develop policy in your school around safe restraint.
NOTE: This training does not cover specific safe restraint techniques as these need to be taught in person.
Who should attend?
Anyone who works in direct contact with children would be suitable to attend this training. However, positions which might be especially suited are those who have responsibility for Safeguarding in Schools, one to one workers, pastoral leaders, counsellors, teachers, teaching assistants and learning support teachers.
This training would also be ideal for those in positions of pastoral or safeguarding leadership who need to develop policy and practice around safe restraint in their school. Any teacher looking to improve their understanding of safe handling theory and what they can do to avoid harm and the use of restraint.
